Profile
Eri Nakamura joined Capcom around 1989-90 as a graphic designer in the arcade section specialising in characters. After working on Magic Sword (released in June 1990), she joined the team in charge of Street Fighter II (1991), for which some characters existed only at the stage of vague concepts at this point. After a draw with two other graphic designers who joined the project at the same time as her, she chose to work on E.Honda, a sumotori to whom she added make-up borrowed from kabuki. Although the character has the same birthday as his designer, it was to Chun-Li that she lent her voice in the same game (accompanied by at least one other Capcom employee). She was also responsible for certain special effects such as Dhalsim’s flame effects and the hadoken.
In the mid-90s, she became team leader for the graphic artists in charge of animating the characters (at least since Street Fighter Alpha 2, which may explain why she didn’t work on that episode as a graphic designer).
She has animated a number of beat’em up and 2D one-on-one fighting game characters, from Ginzu the Ninja to Psylocke, not forgetting Nakoruru, Chun-Li, Tao, R.Mika, B.B Hood and even Jubilee, a character she has wanted to work on since X-Men COTA and whom she asked Atsushi Tomita, Marvel Vs Capcom‘s planner, to take on.
She sometimes does illustrations for the Street Fighter series, from SFII to SFV Arcade Edition or Street Fighter Alpha, but also for the Vampire / Darkstalkers series.
In the 2000s, with the slowdown in Capcom’s arcade business and the merger of its arcade and consumer divisions, she began working on console games. This was particularly the case with The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, an episode released on the GBA and developed by graphic designers who had previously been accustomed to arcade games, such as Takenori Kimoto, whose surname she now bears. She alternated between 2D and 3D games during this decade, and tried her hand at character modelling. In 2011, her last known game as a graphic designer was Ace Attorney Investigations 2, for which she also lent her voice to one of the characters.
According to an interview given in 2018, she now works as a manager and is responsible for training character designers.
Note: Eri Nakamura doesn’t have a Twitter account, but she sometimes uses Takenori Kimoto’s.
